Video Demos

Quick Facts

Video Demo submissions are short motion presentations that showcase examples best communicated in this format or provide supplementary content to another submission (e.g. a paper). Video demos can, but are not restricted to present your  study design, data collection design, progress over time, study results, research projects, design concepts and visions of the future. We particularly encourage video submissions which go beyond standard presentation formats that would be part of a presentation in the papers or work in progress track. Please note that filmed (or animated) content is expected - recorded slideshows will not be accepted.

Submissions should contain a video, thumbnail image and subtitle file and an extended abstract that describes the submission. While the content can be an illustrative description of studies, labs and projects, we are looking for contributions that are citable as a scientific contribution and do not qualify as advertisement. Video Demo submissions can be a side product of a research contribution to other conference tracks (e.g., an illustrative description of a test track or a new experience measurement methodology or a dynamic description of a research prototype); however, they need to stand alone and viewable without mandatorily having to look at the related contribution.

Message from the AutoUI Video Demos Chairs

Video showcases have become an integral part of the Auto-UI program and community. We would like to invite you to submit self-explanatory videos related to various aspects of Auto-UI. The video submissions can focus on the presentation of study design, data collection design, progress over time, study results, research projects, design concepts and visions of the future, whereby we particularly encourage humorous, entertaining, and/or visually impressive contributions. Video submissions are independent of other conference tracks but can support e.g. data or visualizations of papers or work in progress. We are looking forward to receiving your submissions and to meeting you at the Auto-UI 2021 conference!

PREPARE AND SUBMIT

Submissions consist of a video with subtitles and thumbnail and an extended abstract. Failure to submit either file will result in an automatic rejection. The required documents are:

Your Submission

  • Video content should be self-contained and self-explanatory. There will be no live narration or in-person introduction when videos are presented in the session.
  • Present your study design, data collection design, progress over time, study results, research projects, design concepts and visions of the future.
  • Video content should not contain advertisements or be heavily promotional in nature.
  • Cover Slide (PPTX, Illustrator): Title and authors’ information should appear at the beginning of the video by using the conference template slide and should appear for 5 seconds. You should include at the end your contact-information again (can be in your design; you are encouraged to show a picture of the authors, in order to enhance personal experience within the virtual format of the conference). Do not anonymize videos for review. The cover slide must be submitted additionally as image to have for your video a thumbnail.
  • Videos should not exceed 3 minutes in length (excluded are 5 second cover slide).

Video Specification

To ensure the best video experience for the video track, we ask for specific settings for your video. Don’t get shocked - we walk you through.

Create the video with the software of your preference. There are lots of free alternatives (e.g. Hitfilm Express, DaVinci Resolve, Apple iMovie) but you can also use paid alternatives.

Create your project with the following settings:

  • min 1920x1080 (FullHD) or max 3849x2160 pixel (4K)
  • Progressive Scan (no interlacing), e.g. the p in 1080p
  • Aspect Radio: 16:9, Landscape, square pixels
  • Frame rate should be around min 29.97fps
  • Audio: min 48Khz, stereo, export with ACC

Most of the named video software packages export your video already in the following settings. However, we recommend using a video transcoder to make your video smaller without losing too much quality. (Handbrake for Windows, Mac and Linux).

Use the following settings:

  • The Videos are using the Container Format MP4
  • Video Codec h.265 (10-bit x265)
  • Audio Codec ACC-LC (Passthrough)

The exported file size should not exceed 250 MB. Do not use Digital Right Management (DRM) on your video file submission.

Captions and Subtitles

All spoken dialog must be in English and closed captioned (subtitled) to improve accessibility. You should include subtitles or captions to your video to guarantee that it can be consumed in places with ambient noise, where sound is unacceptable, and by hearing-impaired individuals.

A closed-captioning file, in .srt format should be submitted along the video. There are several free, easy ways to caption your videos. We recommend uploading your video to YouTube and use the provided captioning tools; You can keep the video private or unlisted and delete it immediately after. You have the choice to manually create all captions, or let YouTube automatically generate captions and manually correct them. Afterwards, you can download the .srt-file. A step-by-step tutorial is available here.

Third-Party Material and Copyright

Authors retain copyright to videos, but ACM requires that you sign an agreement allowing ACM to distribute the material.

It is very important that you have the rights to use all the material that is contained in your submission, including music, video, images, etc. Attaining permissions to use video, audio, or pictures of identifiable people or proprietary content rests with the author, not the ACM or the AutoUI conference. Note: You will be asked to confirm that you agree with these policies on the final submission form.

The videos will be uploaded to YouTube. YouTube will show advertisements with videos that contain monetized audio content, regardless of what copyright is associated with that content. To ensure that your video can show without advertisements, we recommend that you upload your video to YouTube in advance before submission, set to “private”, to check whether it is used for monetization.

Sanity Check

Please ensure that content is appropriate in terms of rights and taste, does not contain inappropriate language, viewpoints or imagery and is unlikely to cause offence to any individuals or groups either present at the conference or beyond.

Extended Abstract

  • A 2-4 page extended abstract prepared in accordance with the new single-column ACM SIGCHI format. As part of this 2-4 page document should be an abstract with a maximum of 150 words.
  • The extended abstract should be submitted as a PDF file.
  • Any submission longer than 4 pages (not counting references) and/or not adhering to the Extended Abstracts Format will be automatically desk-rejected.
  • Your extended abstract should be close to camera-ready.
  • The submissions should not be anonymized for reviews
  • Submissions must be in well written English. Note: If your English writing skills are not very good, we recommend to ask a professional editor to edit your manuscript before submission.
  • Details about use of the templates:
    • Word: Write your extended abstract using the Submission Template (Review Submission Format). Follow the embedded instructions to apply the paragraph styles to your various text elements. The text is in single-column format at this stage and no additional formatting is required at this point. A video demonstration of the new template can be found here: https://youtu.be/sUGEoPaXRKQ
    • LaTeX: Please use the latest version of the Master Article Template - LaTeX (1.75; published November 16, 2020) to create your article submission. With the “sample-sigconf.tex” template, use the “manuscript” call to create a single column format, i.e., setting \documentclass[manuscript]{acmart}. Please review the LaTeX documentation and ACM’s LaTeX best practices guide should you have any questions.

Curated Selection

Curated content is highly selective but does not necessarily follow a reviewing process by a committee. Curated content may be selected from submissions or invited by the track chairs. Authors should not expect to receive formal feedback on their submission other than the selection decision.

Videos will be curated by the Videos Chairs (and possibly a small group of curators), according to two main criteria:

  • Content: Is the material interesting to Auto-UI researchers and professionals? The topic of the video is ultimately up to the authors, but some approaches that have worked well in other conferences and in Auto-UI include the following: presentations of research systems, visions of the future, humorous parodies or thoughtful critiques of Auto-UI, and reports on ethnographic work and user studies. A video’s content evaluation depends on how directly it addresses issues of relevance to Auto-UI, and whether its message is interesting and engaging.
  • Presentation: Is the video edited well? Does it make appropriate use of pacing, music, and special effects? Does it drag on, or will it hold an audience’s attention? Because the video program is a live screening, we strongly encourage creative editing of your videos. The tight time limit is imposed to keep videos short and punchy. In addition to effective pacing, your video should include appropriate music or soundtrack. Your idea may be brilliant, but if you can’t convey it in an engaging way, it will not make a good live video piece.

Original video submissions will be prioritized, but videos that have been published or released previously will also be given consideration. If a video has been published or released previously, please make clear in your submission any prior exposure your video has received.

Submissions should not contain sensitive, private, or proprietary information that cannot be disclosed at publication time. Submissions should NOT be anonymous. However, confidentiality of submissions will be maintained during the review process. All rejected submissions will be kept confidential in perpetuity. All submitted materials for accepted submissions will be kept confidential until the start of the conference, with the exception of title and author information which may be published on the website prior to the conference.

UPON ACCEPTANCE OF YOUR SUBMISSION

Authors of accepted submissions will receive instructions on how to prepare and submit the publication-ready version, and details on the video presentation and scheduling at the conference.

  1. Upon acceptance, you will receive a digital copyright form, which you are required to complete. Please note that you cannot change the title of your extended abstract after you submit the copyright form.
  2. Once the copyright form is completed, we will provide you with the copyright information you must insert into your extended abstract.
  3. The final camera-ready version needs to be submitted via the Precision Submission System. The submission includes, and is not complete without, giving us permission to distribute your final camera-ready version as described above.
  4. We might also request modifications for the video, if it does not follow the instructions.

A member of the program committee and the publication chairs will check that the final versions meet the requirements for publication and if so, will finalize the acceptance. Authors are encouraged to submit their revisions earlier than the deadline, in case it is judged that the video and extended abstract do not meet the committee requirements. If the authors are unable to meet these requirements by the deadline, the videos chairs will be notified and may be required to remove the extended abstract and video from the program.

Upon acceptance, at least one author must register for the conference by the early registration deadline in order for the video and extended abstract to be published.

AT THE CONFERENCE

Authors are expected to register and attend the conference but are not required to present their work on stage. Rather, a time and location will be assigned to the video session and the video will be showcased in a previously communicated slot.

Video submissions whose authors are not at the conference may be withdrawn from the Extended Abstracts and the Digital Library.

AFTER THE CONFERENCE

Accepted videos and extended abstracts will be made available in the Auto-UI Adjunct Proceedings, distributed by the conference (e.g., on the conference website) and will secure publication in the ACM Digital Library, where they will remain accessible to researchers and practitioners worldwide. The Videos will be published on YouTube after the conference in the SIGCHI library.
